FreeWan Cell Demo Debutes!
This is the official advertisement of FreeWan. The actual cell that
hosts the full function version of this demo page runs on a Linux distribution built from
scratch. The main server is a homebuilt Pentium III box with 512 megabytes of ram and a 110G
hardrive. It is connected to a Linksys WRT54g wireless router. The router is set to act as a
DHCP server, and it points DNS to the BIND server running on the main computer. The webserver
that the main computer runs is Apache. The main computer is overkill, and I will try other
computers to try to find out what the minimum requirements are. Unfortunately, I only have
dialup, so I am unable to provide Internet access at this time.
Future plans
With some perseverance, patience, participation, and inspiration of
a small part of the population, the world will have a network that is free-er than any other
network that has ever been. This sounds like a lofty goal, but it is something that is very
possible, that is, with your participation. At the moment, what is needed is for hackers and
decent network administrators to set up their own FreeWan cell using the operating system they
usually use. We need these people to note what troubles they ran into, what programs they
used to provide DNS (Domain Name Service), what information they reference to set up their
cell, and so on. This project is in its very beginnings, and different people will run into
different problems. Once this is done, documentation can be written for others to set up
their cells. Users are important as well since users will help supply and download
information. User also test the system and provide valuable feedback. When enough people get
fed up with the spam, viruses, over-priced service, bandwidth restrictions, and the lack of
privacy, FreeWan will prevail. When enough people start and use FreeWan cells, there will
be way found to interconnect these cells. Eventually cells can be formed into a IPV6 network
that has the potential to surpass the capabilities and freedom of the current Internet.
Imagine that you could use a cellphone anythere in the world to call anyone else in the world
and the call would not cost a dime. The technology to do this exist right now. We only have
to take advantage of it. The same thing applies to the FreeWan network.
Some people have requested that I post the configuration of my BIND
configuration files. Well here they are: named.conf
com.zone cx.zone edu.zone
freewan.rev freewan.zone
localhost.zone named.ca
named.local net.zone org.zone
The way my named (BIND) server is set up, named.conf goes in /etc directory. The other files go in
/var/named/caching-examples directory. The way I have these files set up should provide the pattern
for other top level domains you choose to add. Have a nice day :-).
